Lore & Background

Three other members join Yumia's team: Rutger Arendt, an orphan treasure hunter; Nina Friede, a veteran mercenary later revealed to be an ancient homunculus; and Lenja, a demihuman Wellek whose race originally created alchemy but banned it after Aladiss's fall. The group encounters Vesper and two other mutants—Lili Borea, a woman transformed into a sheep-like mutant, and Corleonis, a wolf-like alchemy researcher—who work for Basilius, the last emperor of Aladiss, thought dead for centuries. The mutants helped Basilius, whose memories were transferred to homunculi, gather memories of Aladiss in a vain effort to restore it after an accident caused the manabound areas and the empire's collapse. Yumia confronts Basilius; Flammi sacrifices itself to protect her, allowing her to destroy him. The team parts ways, with Yumia staying in Aladiss to study its secrets and restore trust in alchemy.

Reader's Guide

Atelier Yumia marks a significant shift for the Atelier series as the first entry in the Memories series, introducing an open world design and a real-time battle system where party members move around enemies and attack with skills and items. The game emphasizes item crafting (alchemy) and exploration hindered by dangerous zones that can be purified by reaching landmarks. Its narrative, based on elements from Atelier Ryza 3, was reconstructed to include antagonists after complaints about Ryza 3 lacking villains. Upon release, the game received 'generally favorable' reviews on Metacritic and strong approval on OpenCritic, recommended by 77% of critics. Famitsu gave it 34 out of 40. Selling over 300,000 copies in its first week, it became the fastest-selling game in the franchise, indicating strong commercial and critical reception. The sequel, Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories, is set for 2027.
